UCSD Opens Season at Lancer Dive Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - A trio of University of California San Diego student-athletes opened their 2017-18 season on Saturday afternoon at the Lancer Dive Invite, hosted by California Baptist University at the Lancer Aquatics Center.

Brooke Abrantes (San Diego/Santana HS) had the top finish by a Triton, as the runner-up in the three-meter springboard competition with a score of 240.25 over six dives. She was just narrowly edged in the 16-diver field by sophomore Makenzie Kamei of Division I Cal Poly, who totaled 241.00. Abrantes was eighth among 18 in the one-meter event (192.60).

Patty Sullivan was seventh on three-meter (195.90) and 12th on one-meter (178.50). A third UC San Diego junior, Delainey Carlin (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS), did not compete. The fourth diver on the Triton women's roster, true freshman Emily Stong out of Mission Viejo, was not able to make her college debut.

UCSD's only male diver, senior Trevor Jackson (Ramona/Ramona HS), was fourth out of 11 on the one-meter board (229.55), and fourth again on three-meter (219.17) out of 10 participants.

The trio of Tritons were under the direction for the first time of new head diving coach Rafaella Suarez, a 2013 San Diego State University graduate and former Aztec diver who was a member of the Ecuador national team.

The UC San Diego men's and women's swimmers begin their new campaign with a dual meet against NCAA Division III program Claremont-Mudd-Scripps next Saturday, Oct. 28. They will be joined by the diving contingent, with the action starting at 12 p.m. Parking and admission into Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla are free.
