PCSC Athletes of the Week: Jan. 19

The Pacific Collegiate Swim and Dive Conference announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 11-17 on Tuesday. The PCSC named Biola's Sammy Dammann and Chris Nanfria its NAIA Athletes of the Week, while Tyler Andree and Allison Dominguez, both from UC Santa Cruz, earned Division III honors. In Division II, UC San Diego claimed both awards, with Michael Cohn collecting his third award and Colleen Daley snagging her second weekly honor from the conference. Pepperdine's Sydney Newman rounded out this week's accolades as the Division I Athlete of the Week.

DI Women

Sydney Newman, Pepperdine: At the Beach Cup in San Diego, Sydney Newman placed fourth, both days, in the diving events. Her scores 207.45 (Day 1) and 217.80 (Day 2) were both season and personal bests.

DII Men

Michael Cohn, UC San Diego: Junior Michael Cohn had a pair of runner-up finishes in the backstroke to California Baptist star senior Josh Hanson while No. 5 UCSD dropped a 161-137 decision on the road to the 12th-ranked Lancers Saturday. His times were 50.72 and 1:49.00, with a B mark in the 200 and within a second of one in the 100. He had the lone B time for the Triton men. Cohn also swam the leadoff back leg of the second-place 400 medley relay (50.83), and anchor for the third-place 200 free relay (21.65).

DII Women

Colleen Daley, UC San Diego: Senior Colleen Daley won the 50 free and led off the first-place 200 free relay in a 173-127 loss for No. 2 UCSD at No. 6 California Baptist Saturday. She sped to a B standard of 23.90 in the 50 and placed third in an off event, the 200 free, in 1:55.72. Her split in the free relay was 24.20, with the foursome also posting a B mark. Daley swam the anchor leg of the second-place 400 medley relay (51.35).

DIII Men

Tyler Andree, UC Santa Cruz: Tyler posted season bests in the 1000 free (10:09.99) and 400 IM (4:17.60) against Cal Poly in dual meet action last week.

DIII Women

Allison Dominguez, UC Santa Cruz: Allison posted season bests in both the 1000 free (11:46.08) and 100 back (1:07.52) in a dual meet with Cal Poly last week.

NAIA Men

Charles Nanfria, Biola: Charles claimed first in the 200 fly, posting an NAIA A cut with his time of 2:01.20. He also finished second in the 100 fly while grabbing an NAIA B cut (54.84).

NAIA Women

Sammy Dammann, Biola: Sammy posted an NAIA A cut in the 200 fly (2:19.25) and dropped nearly two seconds off her best time in the 100 fly (1:03.81).

The PCSC includes institutions from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). All three divisions of the NCAA are represented. Each week, the PCSC coaches nominate and vote on the Athletes of the Week in seven categories: NCAA Division I women, Division II men and women, Division III men and women and NAIA men and women.
