PCSC Athletes of the Week: Jan. 25
The Pacific Collegiate Swim and Dive Conference announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 18-24 on Tuesday. The PCSC named Fresno Pacific's Bavindeep Basra and Wesley Coles its Division II honorees, while Kelsey Warkentin and Cameron Braun, both from UC Santa Cruz, earned the Division III awards. Loyola Marymount's Kristen Clarno claimed rounded out this week's accolades as the Division I Athlete of the Week.
DII Men
Wesley Coles, Fresno Pacific: Wesley was part of 3 wins and 1 2nd place against UC Santa Cruz and Cal State Bakersfield. He was part of the winning 400 Medley Relay with a 50.10 fly split. He went on to win the 1000 (9:45.34) and 200 Fly (1:54.68), while he placed 2nd in the 500 Free (4:44.33).
DII Women
Bavindeep Basra, Fresno Pacific: Bavi won 5 of 6 individual events over the course of the weekend against Cal State East Bay on Friday and UC-Santa Cruz and Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday. On Friday she won the 200 Fly (2:10.14) and 400 IM (4:32.89), while she placed 2nd in the 200 Back (2:10.38). On Saturday, she won the 200 Fly (2:09.65), 200 Breast (2:26.20) and 200 IM (2:09.73)
DIII Men
Cameron Braun, UC Santa Cruz: Over the weekend against Fresno Pacific and Cal State Bakersfield, Cameron anchored the 400 Medley Relay with a split of 48.30. He also posted times of 21.85 in the 50 free and 48.29 in the 100 Free. In addition, Cameron led off 200 free relay with a split of 21.99.
DIII Women
Kelsey Warkentin, UC Santa Cruz: At the weekend meets against Fresno Pacific and Cal State Bakersfield, Kelsey posted times of 2:19.43 in the 200 fly and 2:21.51 in the 200 IM. Kelsey also led off the 200 Free Relay with a 27.43 split.
DI Women
Kristen Clarno, Loyola Marymount: Kristen highlighted LMU's final home meet against Pacific by winning the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.28, and finishing second in the 200 freestyle (1:56.11) and fourth in the 50 freestyle. This was the last home swim meet for this versatile senior who holds LMU program records in both the 200 (2:02.98) and 400 individual medley (4:24.67) and is also ranked second on LMU's all-time Top-10 list in the 200 freestyle (1:51.05), fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:03.07), fifth in the 100 backstroke (57.45) and seventh in the 100 freestyle (51.50) over the course of her stellar collegiate career.
The PCSC includes institutions from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). All three divisions of the NCAA are represented. Each week, the PCSC coaches nominate and vote on the Athletes of the Week in seven categories: NCAA Division I women, Division II men and women, Division III men and women and NAIA men and women.
