PCSC Athletes of the Week: Nov. 2

The Pacific Coast Swim Conference has announced the PCSC Swimmer & Divers for the week of October 27-November 2. This week six athletes amongst all four levels received recognition, coming from Cal State East Bay, LMU, UCSC, and Westmont.

MEN

NCAA DIII Swimmer

Aaron Wu -- UCSC

Wu had much success at the Slug Shootout and Bay Area Invite, coming out with eight podium finishes in as many events. At the Slug Shootout, he tied a personal best in the 100 Fly (52.27) which earned him a first place finish. He was finished second in the 50 Free (22.28), 200 Medley Relay (23.19 Split), and third in the 400 Free Relay (49.47 Split). Rounding out the weekend at the Bay Area Invite, Wu won the 100 Fly (52.38), and had top three finishes in three events: 200 Free Relay (22.38 Split), 400 Medley Relay, and 200 Fly (2:01.67). This is Wu's first weekly honor and one of three for UCSC this season.

WOMEN

NCAA DI Swimmer

Ashley Leaman -- LMU

Leaman set new personal highs in the Lions meet against San Diego. The freshman set a personal best in the 200 Fly (2:14.04), finishing in the top five in that event. Leaman finished second in the 100 Fly (59.96), finishing right behind her fellow LMU teammate. In the 200 IM, she scored second with a time of 2:14.79, after overtaking two opponents in the final ten yards of the event. This is Leaman's first weekly honor and the second for LMU this season.

NCAA DII Swimmer

Maddie Wittkowske -- Cal State East Bay

Wittkowske led the Pioneers in multiple events, coming out with three event wins. The senior came away with top finishes in the 500 Free (5:14.65), 1000 Free (10.49.14), and 1650 Free (18:04.21), the latter two both being top times in the PCSC. She also competed in the 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free, and 200 IM in her two days of competition at the Slug Shootout and Bay Area Invite. This is Wittkowske's first weekly honor and the second for Cal State East Bay this season.

NCAA DIII Swimmer

Maddy Gruender -- UCSC

At the Slug Shootout, Gruender secured three podium finishes, then ended the weekend with two more podium finishes at the Bay Area Invite. For individual events, Gruender won the 200 Free (1:55.70), placed second in the 100 Free (54.17), and set a personal best in the 500 Free (5:20.23). For relays, she was part of the second place 100 Free Relay (53.55 Split), and anchored the 200 Free Relay (25.00 Split) to win second. This is Gruender's first weekly honor and one of three for UCSC this season.

NCAA DIII Diver

Sachiko Correa -- UCSC

In part of the second place finish at the Slug Shootout, Correa's diving performances help put UCSC near the top. The junior scored two wins for the Banana Slugs, winning the 1M (182.20) and the 3M (174.80). This is Correa's first weekly honor and one of three for UCSC this season.

NAIA Swimmer

Olivia Garrison -- Westmont

Garrison was a crucial part to the success from Westmont this past weekend, earning three individual wins, and was part of three second place relay finishes. Her individual wins came in the 1650 Free, 100 Fly, and 200 Free, while her runner-up relay finishes were in the 200 Fly, 400 Free, and 200 Medley. The freshman set new school records in the 200 Free and 200 Fly Relay. This is Garrison's first weekly honor and the second for Westmont this season.

The PCSC includes institutions from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). All three divisions of the NCAA are represented. Each week, the PCSC coaches nominate and vote on the Athletes of the Week in seven categories: NCAA Division I women, Division II men and women, Division III men and women and NAIA men and women.
